HDD vs SSD: Which One Should You Choose?

If you are buying storage in Morocco, the first decision is always the same : HDD or SSD. They are not two qualities of the same product — they are two different technologies, and the right answer depends entirely on what the drive will be doing.

What actually differs

A hard disk drive (HDD) stores data magnetically on spinning platters. A mechanical arm moves across the surface to read and write. It is a moving machine.

A solid state drive (SSD) stores data in NAND flash memory chips. Nothing moves. Access is electronic, which is why it feels instant.

The numbers that matter

HDD SATA SSD NVMe SSD
Sequential speed 150–250 MB/s up to 560 MB/s 3 500–7 000 MB/s
Boot and app loading Slow Fast Fast
Cost per terabyte Lowest Medium Highest
Capacity available Up to 24 TB Up to 8 TB Up to 8 TB
Shock resistance Poor Excellent Excellent
Noise Audible Silent Silent

Which fails first ?

Neither is clearly more reliable — they simply fail differently.

An HDD usually warns you : clicking noises, slow transfers, SMART errors appearing weeks before the end. An SSD tends to die without notice, but it tells you in advance how much life it has left through its TBW rating (terabytes written). A 1 TB SATA SSD is typically rated for 600 TBW, which an office machine will not reach in ten years.

The practical rule has not changed : whichever you choose, keep a second copy. A drive is not a backup.

Which one for which job

  • Speeding up an old laptop or desktop — SSD, without hesitation. Replacing the system drive is the single upgrade that transforms a slow machine. A Samsung 870 EVO 1 TB fits any 2.5-inch bay.
  • A new workstation or gaming PC — NVMe, such as the Samsung 990 PRO 2 TB, for the system and active projects.
  • Archiving and backup — HDD. Cost per terabyte still decides, and an archive drive is rarely read. A Seagate BarraCuda is built for that.
  • A NAS running 24/7 — HDD, but a NAS-rated one such as IronWolf. A desktop drive will not survive continuous operation.
  • Video surveillance — a dedicated surveillance HDD. Neither a desktop drive nor an SSD is designed for continuous write streams.
  • Carrying data around — external SSD. The Samsung T7 Shield survives drops that would destroy an external hard drive.

The honest answer : both

Most professional setups use an SSD for the system and current work, and an HDD for everything that must simply be kept. You get the speed where it is felt and the capacity where it is needed, without paying SSD prices for archived files.

A typical configuration : a 1 TB NVMe for Windows and applications, plus a 4 TB hard drive for archives — cheaper and faster than a single 4 TB SSD.
